[Verse 1]
You said, “Speak from your mind
The words that it finds
Come out of your soul, a part of the whole”
You said, “What does it change?
Both of us know
After tonight, there …
[TONY]
Maria…
The most beautiful sound I’ve ever heard:
Maria, Maria, Maria, Maria…
All the beautiful sounds of the world in a single word:
Maria, Maria, Maria, Maria…
Maria, Maria…
Maria!
I’ve just met a girl named Maria
And …
[Verse 1]
What happens in dreams where we fly?
Never been as high as tonight
Staring through a window in time
For someone to show me what I’m like
He said, “Hello”, it’s like a …
[Verse 1]
Oh-oh-oh, every little smile hides a little lie
Could cut the silence with a knife
Subatomic bliss is nothing left to miss
It’s just empty Russian roulette
[Pre-Chorus]
Try to brush it off my …
My house in Budapest
My hidden treasure chest,
Golden grand piano
My beautiful Castillo1
You
You
I’d leave it all2
My acres of a land
I have achieved
It may be hard for you to,
Stop and believe3
But for you
You
I’d Leave it all
Give me one good reason
Why I should never make a change4
And baby if you hold me
Then all of this will go away5
My many artifacts6
The list goes on
If you just say the words
I’ll up and run7
Oh, to you
You
I’d leave it all
Give me one good reason
Why I should never make a change
And baby if you hold me
Then all of this will go away
Give me one good reason
Why I should never make a change
Baby if you hold me
Then all of this will go away
My friends and family
They, don’t understand
They fear they’d lose so much
If you take my hand8
But, for you
You,
I’d lose it all.
Give me one good reason
Why I should never make a change
And baby if you hold me
Then all of this will go away
Give me one good reason
Why I should never make a change
And baby if you hold me
Then all of this will go away
My house in Budapest
My hidden treasure chest,
Golden grand piano
My beautiful castillo
You
You
I’d leave it all9
George Ezra lists extremely luxurious possessions: treasure, expensive buildings, a grand piano made of gold. Although these material things are a hyperbolic list of the things George Ezra actually owns, the point he is making is that they mean nothing to him in comparison to the love he has for someone. (A “castillo” is a Spanish castle.)
That is, I would give up everything I own if it meant having you.
Acquiring land is a goal of so many men throughout the world. George Ezra explains that doing this has been an important feat for him, but it means nothing if he is unable to pursue romance with the one he loves.
George Ezra asks his beloved to convince him that his life is perfect so that he can see that his life is not perfect.
George Ezra’s focus on his material things will shift to his beloved if she agrees to engage in romance with him.
His relics aren’t necessarily old, but he uses the term “artifacts” to show that he has had an attachment to them for a long time.
George Ezra wants affirmation that his beloved also loves him so that he can abandon his attachment to the things in his life that carry less meaning.
Sometimes families are jealous of people who become romantically close to their relatives. They feel as though they don’t matter anymore. More practically speaking, they could even be cut out of a will or start to get less attention.
George Ezra sings this song about prioritizing one’s beloved above one’s more meaningless priorities in life.
