[Verse 1]
You said, “Speak from your mind
The words that it finds
Come out of your soul, a part of the whole”
You said, “What does it change?
Both of us know
After tonight, there …
[TONY]
Maria…
The most beautiful sound I’ve ever heard:
Maria, Maria, Maria, Maria…
All the beautiful sounds of the world in a single word:
Maria, Maria, Maria, Maria…
Maria, Maria…
Maria!
I’ve just met a girl named Maria
And …
[Verse 1]
What happens in dreams where we fly?
Never been as high as tonight
Staring through a window in time
For someone to show me what I’m like
He said, “Hello”, it’s like a …
[Verse 1]
Oh-oh-oh, every little smile hides a little lie
Could cut the silence with a knife
Subatomic bliss is nothing left to miss
It’s just empty Russian roulette
[Pre-Chorus]
Try to brush it off my …
Some legends are told
Some turn to dust or to gold1
But you will remember me
Remember me for centuries2
And just one mistake3
Is all it will take
We’ll go down in history
Remember me for centuries
Remember me for centuries
Mummified my teenage dreams4
No, it’s nothing wrong with me
The kids are all wrong
The stories are off5
Heavy metal broke my heart6
Come on, come on and let me in
The bruises on your thighs like my fingerprints
And this is for tonight
I thought that you would feel
I never meant for you to fix yourself7
Some legends are told
Some turn to dust or to gold
But you will remember me
Remember me for centuries
And just one mistake
Is all it will take
We’ll go down in history
Remember me for centuries
Remember me for centuries
And I can’t stop ’til the whole world knows my name8
‘Cause I was only born inside my dreams
Until you die for me, as long as there is a light, my shadow’s over you9
‘Cause I am the opposite of amnesia10
And you’re a cherry blossom
You’re about to bloom
You look so pretty, but you’re gone so soon11
Some legends are told
Some turn to dust or to gold
But you will remember me
Remember me for centuries
And just one mistake
Is all it will take
We’ll go down in history
Remember me for centuries
Remember me for centuries
We’ve been here forever12
And here’s the frozen fruit
I could scream forever13
We are the poisoned youth14
Some legends are told
Some turn to dust or to gold
But you will remember me
Remember me for centuries
And just one mistake
Is all it will take
We’ll go down in history
Remember me for centuries
We’ll go down in history
Remember me for centuries15
Fall Out Boy is referencing the fact that people go down in history as heroes or villains. One must perform a very bad act or a very good act to be remembered for a long time.
The concept behind the song “Centuries” is historical fame and the extent to which people will go to achieve it.
“One mistake” means that tragic actions often cause one to make history.
Here the band Fall Out Boy recalls their youthful ambitions to achieve fame through their music, which was once of a more edgy, alternative genre.
Fall Out Boy is resisting the idea that they “sold out,” when they say, “it’s nothing wrong with me…the stories are off.”
Fall Out Boy once performed heavier rock music, but at some point became disillusioned, thus saying, “heavy metal broke my heart.
This stanza of the song contains outlying content, referring to sex (perhaps semi-consensual sex) and other aggressive acts performed for the sake of being know.
“Til the whole world knows my name” refers to the pursuit of fame at all costs, even if it means committing a terrible crime like murder.
“My shadow’s over you” may refer to a sick crime like murder or holding victims hostage in a public area for all the world to see.
Amnesia is memory loss. Therefore, the opposite of amnesia is permanent remembrance.
The “cherry blossom” Fall Out Boy sings about is a metaphor for innocent people who become victims simply because somebody wants historical fame.
Despite inevitably succumbing to a physical death one day, Fall Out Boy explains that being written into history allows one’s legacy to live on.
“I could scream forever” means that Fall Out Boy could keep performing music long into the future.
“We are the poisoned youth” means that musicians pursuing fame are poisoned by that very desire for fame.
The music video depicts a gladiator-like scene in the medieval Mediterranean region. After his team of small comrades is destroyed by an alpha-gladiator, a small boy sticks a single stone into his sling and kills his huge adversary with a single shot to the forehead. This is an allusion to David and Goliath, a story from the Hebrew scriptures about a small boy who manages to kill a giant with a rock. Both David and Goliath are well-remembered. However, one is notorious while the other one is celebrated.
