[Verse 1]
You said, “Speak from your mind
The words that it finds
Come out of your soul, a part of the whole”
You said, “What does it change?
Both of us know
After tonight, there …
[TONY]
Maria…
The most beautiful sound I’ve ever heard:
Maria, Maria, Maria, Maria…
All the beautiful sounds of the world in a single word:
Maria, Maria, Maria, Maria…
Maria, Maria…
Maria!
I’ve just met a girl named Maria
And …
[Verse 1]
What happens in dreams where we fly?
Never been as high as tonight
Staring through a window in time
For someone to show me what I’m like
He said, “Hello”, it’s like a …
[Verse 1]
Oh-oh-oh, every little smile hides a little lie
Could cut the silence with a knife
Subatomic bliss is nothing left to miss
It’s just empty Russian roulette

When it went down,1 it was so hard to breathe2
I gave up everything, and I fall, fall down to the floor3
life was escaping me, I couldn’t find myself
’til it was all lost, not anymore4
I’m holding on to all the pieces of my heart’s debris,5 ’til it’s time
I’ll…I’ll pull it together and fix myself eventually,6 I know it’s mine7
I found gold in the wreckage,8 put it in a necklace9
keeping it ’cause I, I know that it’s mine
I wear it like a message, so I don’t forget it10
keeping it ’cause I, I know that it’s mine
I know that it’s mine, no matter what I do,
I know that it’s mine, whether I win or lose
and even though my heart needs to take its time,
I know that it’s mine, I know that it’s mine11
Facing the change, but it’s still tough to see
at first I fought it all, I was so mean
I’m still unsure, how it’s supposed to be
I’m taking every day now by the skin of my teeth, until I learn12
I’m holding on to all the pieces of my hearts debris, ’til it’s time
I’ll… I’ll pull it together and fix myself eventually, I know it’s mine
I found gold in the wreckage, put it in a necklace
keeping it ’cause I, I know that it’s mine
I wear it like a message, so I don’t forget it
keeping it ’cause I, I know that it’s mine
I know that it’s mine, no matter what I do,
I know that it’s mine, whether I win or lose
and even though my heart needs to take its time,
I know that it’s mine, I know that it’s mine
I found gold in the wreckage, put it in a necklace
keeping it ’cause I, I know that it’s mine
I wear it like a message, so I don’t forget it
keeping it ’cause I, I know that it’s mine
I know that it’s mine, no matter what I do,
I know that it’s mine, whether I win or lose
and even though my heart needs to take its time,
I know that it’s mine, I know that it’s mine13
“When it went down” means “when we broke up.”
It was not literally hard to breathe. Phoebe Ryan just wants her listeners to understand that the break-up was not easy on her.
Phoebe Ryan felt like the break-up was her “rock bottom.”
Just as things seemed to be so terrible, Phoebe Ryan chose to be resilient.
“My heart’s debris” indicates that Phoebe Ryan’s heart was shattered. Now she’s trying to “collect the pieces.” In other words, she’s pursuing healing.
Phoebe Ryan maintains optimism about healing, however long it may take.
“I know it’s mine” means “I own my own heart.”
“I found gold in the wreckage” means “I struggled to turn a bad thing into a good thing.”
The necklace is metaphorical for remembering what one has endured.
Struggling to find healing is a constant battle. Phoebe Ryan is determined not to forget that good can be derived from tragic circumstances.
Phoebe Ryan finds comfort in the fact that her heart is her own. Regardless of her situation, whether good or bad, she is comforted by this idea.
Phoebe Ryan acknowledges that she may need to learn a lot to move forward. This stanza indicates that she takes some ownership for her hardships.
Generally, this song is about resilience in the face of hardships, especially after a heartbreak.

I believe this song is about someone having their heart broken and needing to take some time to themselves before they can jump into another relationship. Like “I found it in the wreckage” being as she found herself again after losing herself. Then “I wear it like a message, so I don’t forget it” like she wants to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

To me I believe that this song is about a girl who has broken up with someone and her heart has been broken but is starting to pick herself up after it all for example ‘I found gold in the wreckage’ to me I think she is trying to say that even though her heart was broken it is still made of gold and when she says ‘I wear it like a message’ it seems like she is trying to tell herself the break up wasn’t her fault and lastly she says ‘ cause I know that it’s mine’ her heart is hers and nobody can take that away from her
