Matt Simons – With you Lyrics
[Verse 1:]

[Verse 1:]
Honest where I start from
I try and impart my wisdom
A combination of truth and fear
That’s the way it’s always been
My father and his before him
At times we hurt the …
[Verse 1]
Oh, pity me
I’m so alone and so blue
My friends have all gone away
Their friendliness too
[Pre-Chorus]
It was I on my own
With no need to belong
And I wanted to die
That’s when …
[Verse 1]
Got some money, got some cash
I’m rich and now I’m sad
And I wonder if I’m sad about the money that I have
Got some boats on my plane
At the hotel …
[Intro]
Yeah
Polishin’ a goddamn sword, you know what I’m sayin’?
Polishin’ a sword (Uh, uh, uh, uh)
Concrete Family, Concrete Industries, Concrete Boys up, always, never down
(And this beat from Cash, not from …
When the only sound in the empty street
Is the heavy tread of the heavy feet
That belong to a lonesome cop
I open shop
When the moon so long has been gazing down

As I’m getting older, chip up on my shoulder1
Rolling through life, to roll over and die2
[scat singing]
Missing hippy Jon, salad days are gone3
Remembering things just to tell ‘em so long4
[scat singing]
Oh mama, actin’ like my life’s already over5
Oh dear, act your age and try another year6
Always feeling tired, smiling when required7
Write another year off8 and kindly resign9
[scat singing]
Salad days are gone, missing hippy Jon
Remembering things just to tell ‘em so long
[scat singing]
Oh mama, actin’ like my life’s already over
Oh dear, act your age and try another year [x2]10
“Chip up on my shoulder” means “an inconvenience.”
Mac DeMarco fears passing through life without any purpose, only to find himself reaching the end of the human experience and passing away.
Mac DeMarco speaks of a friend. “Salad days” were regular times that he would get together with that friend.
“Remembering things just to tell ’em so long” means “reflecting on past shared experiences.”
Mac DeMarco feels as though he has allowed life to pass him by, but he acknowledges that he still has some time left.
“Act your age and try another year” means “act a year older than you really are” or “be more mature.”
“Smiling when required” means that people waste a lot of life on social niceties rather than just doing the thing that they want to do. Mac DeMarco believes in living life to the fullest.
“Write another year off” has a fatalistic connotation. It’s almost like saying, “Well, we’re going to die someday, so what’s another year?”
“Kindly resign” means “succumb to old age.”
As Mac DeMarco gets older, he wonders whether he hasn’t seized life for all it is. That is the point of this song.
