[Verse 1]
You said, “Speak from your mind
The words that it finds
Come out of your soul, a part of the whole”
You said, “What does it change?
Both of us know
After tonight, there …
[TONY]
Maria…
The most beautiful sound I’ve ever heard:
Maria, Maria, Maria, Maria…
All the beautiful sounds of the world in a single word:
Maria, Maria, Maria, Maria…
Maria, Maria…
Maria!
I’ve just met a girl named Maria
And …
[Verse 1]
What happens in dreams where we fly?
Never been as high as tonight
Staring through a window in time
For someone to show me what I’m like
He said, “Hello”, it’s like a …
[Verse 1]
Oh-oh-oh, every little smile hides a little lie
Could cut the silence with a knife
Subatomic bliss is nothing left to miss
It’s just empty Russian roulette
[Pre-Chorus]
Try to brush it off my …
Truly, truly, truly real1
Enter the override, how we run the game2
Sleeker and cheaper, the wind changed3
Following deeper, they hear what I say
Spectral incentives have paved the way4
Everything is wrong, oh, everything is wrong5
I guess we hope in time what is now is overcome6
I think I know why, I say what I say
Inverse achievements, I rue the days7
Am I more soulful, or am I coming down now?8
Can we start over as agents of peace?9
Everything is wrong, oh, everything is wrong
All we have is time, but my heart is going numb10
It’s taken a part of both of us11
And nobody likes to wait12
Everything is wrong, truly wrong, everything is wrong
Everything is wrong
Truly, truly, truly real
Oh love, hold on, hold on, hold on13
Oh love, hold on, hold on, hold on
We made our home, without begging your pardon14
We made our home, with time alone
It’s taken the best of us
But nobody likes to wait
Everything is wrong, truly wrong, everything is wrong15
“Truly real” indicates that Interpol desires what is truly real, not the falsehoods that divide humans.
“How we run the game” refers to the way people take advantage of others through systems of oppression.
Interpol criticized the goal of the manufacturing industry: to design something sleek at a low cost of production and sale. This never-ending struggle is so ambitious that it leads human to think they can figuratively “change the winds.”
“Incentives” are only “spectral” – or evasive – because people are enticed by the possibility of progressing up the social ladder, but such efforts are most often performed in vain.
“Everything is wrong” is a reflection on the moral state of the world: war, poverty, exploitation, injustice, etc.
Interpol hopes that today’s sufferings can be overcome in the future, even if they are atrocious in the present.
When one looks back on his or her achievements in retrospect, those achievements can feel meaningless if nothing fulfilling came from them.
In other words, was “going through the motions of life” fulfilling? Was it real? Or am I beginning to realize it was meaningless?
The systems of the world are based on power and domination. Is it to late to realign the human race? Is it too late for us to become other-oriented and altruistic?
“My heart is going numb” is another way of saying “I have accepted the status quo, these systems that oppress people. I no longer care about suffering.
The effort that must be exerted to change things is draining on one’s spirit.
Change usually comes slowly.
“Hold on” is a cry to be resilient in times of hardship.
Nobody asked permission to make the world what it is. It has become a terrifying place, but it is still home to humanity.
Interpol wrote this song to grieve about the tragic state of the world.
