[Verse 1]
You said, “Speak from your mind
The words that it finds
Come out of your soul, a part of the whole”
You said, “What does it change?
Both of us know
After tonight, there …
[TONY]
Maria…
The most beautiful sound I’ve ever heard:
Maria, Maria, Maria, Maria…
All the beautiful sounds of the world in a single word:
Maria, Maria, Maria, Maria…
Maria, Maria…
Maria!
I’ve just met a girl named Maria
And …
[Verse 1]
What happens in dreams where we fly?
Never been as high as tonight
Staring through a window in time
For someone to show me what I’m like
He said, “Hello”, it’s like a …
[Verse 1]
Oh-oh-oh, every little smile hides a little lie
Could cut the silence with a knife
Subatomic bliss is nothing left to miss
It’s just empty Russian roulette
[Pre-Chorus]
Try to brush it off my …
All the broken hearts in the world still beat1
Let’s not make it harder than it has to be2
Ohh, it’s all the same thing
Girls chase boys chase girls3
[x2]
I’m a little let down but I’m not dead
There’s a little bit more that has to be said4
You played me now I play you too
Let’s just call it over5
All the broken hearts in the world still beat
Let’s not make it harder than it has to be
Ohh, it’s all the same thing
Girls chase boys chase girls
[x2]
Chase girls, chase boys, chase boys,6 chase girls
I’m a little bit home but I’m not there yet
It’s one to forgive but it’s hard to forget
Don’t call me, I won’t call you too
Let’s just call it over7
All the broken hearts in the world still beat
Let’s not make it harder than it has to be
Ohh, it’s all the same thing
Girls chase boys chase girls
[x2]
Chase girls, chase boys, chase boys, chase girls
I got two hands, one beating heart
And I’ll be alright8
I’m gonna be alright
Yeah I got two hands, one beating heart
And I’ll be alright
I’m gonna be alright
All the broken hearts in the world still beat
Let’s not make it harder than it has to be
Ohh, it’s all the same thing
Girls chase boys chase girls
[x2]
(Oh everything is going to be fine
Oh everybody loves you baby)
All the broken hearts in the world still beat
Let’s not make it harder than it has to be
Ohh, it’s all the same thing
Girls chase boys chase girls
[x2]
Ohh, it’s all the same thing
Girls chase boys chase girls
Ingrid Michaelson is “leveling the playing field” of sexuality, suggesting that both females and males have the right to pursue those to whom they are attracted. Ingrid Michaelson wrote “Girls Chase Boys” as a response/retaliation to Robert Palmer’s “Simply Irresistible” video which depicts females as sex objects existing only for the consumption of men.
By singing “let’s not make it harder than it has to be,” Ingrid Michaelson is insisting that we shouldn’t try to conform to socially-accepted gender roles. She even thinks not everyone has to be hetero-normative, which is an uncommon belief among popular artists.
“It’s all the same thing / Girls chase boys chase girls” is a lyric indicating that any person has the right to romantically pursue any other person, regardless of gender or sexual orientation.
These lyrics refer to struggles in a romantic relationship, something we all experience.
Just as much as people of all genders and sexual orientations have a right to pursue one another, they also have the right to break one another’s hearts.
By placing two “chase boys” lyrics together, Ingrid Michaelson is giving a moral nod of approval to homosexuality.
This stanza again refers to the ability of people to break somebody’s heart. People of all genders and sexual orientations have feelings. Nobody is as emotionless as a rock.
The reference to two hands and a beating heart indicates that Ingrid Michaelson, like everyone else, is a human being of great resilience, able to overcome heartbreak. “Girls Chase Boys” is about the universal experience of romance, emotion, etc.
