[Verse 1]
You said, “Speak from your mind
The words that it finds
Come out of your soul, a part of the whole”
You said, “What does it change?
Both of us know
After tonight, there …
[TONY]
Maria…
The most beautiful sound I’ve ever heard:
Maria, Maria, Maria, Maria…
All the beautiful sounds of the world in a single word:
Maria, Maria, Maria, Maria…
Maria, Maria…
Maria!
I’ve just met a girl named Maria
And …
[Verse 1]
What happens in dreams where we fly?
Never been as high as tonight
Staring through a window in time
For someone to show me what I’m like
He said, “Hello”, it’s like a …
[Verse 1]
Oh-oh-oh, every little smile hides a little lie
Could cut the silence with a knife
Subatomic bliss is nothing left to miss
It’s just empty Russian roulette

[Verse 1: Jess Glynne]
We’re a thousand miles from comfort, we have traveled land and sea
But as long as you are with me, there’s no place I rather be 31
I would wait forever, exulted in the scene
As long as I am with you, my heart continues to beat 32
[Pre-Chorus: Jess Glynne]
With every step we take, Kyoto to The Bay
Strolling so casually 33
We’re different and the same, gave you another name 34
Switch up the batteries 35
[Chorus: Jess Glynne]
If you gave me a chance I would take it
It’s a shot in the dark but I’ll make it 36
Know with all of your heart, you can’t shame me
When I am with you, there’s no place I rather be
N-n-n-no, no, no, no place I rather be (3x) 37
[Verse 2: Jess Glynne]
We staked out on a mission to find our inner peace 38
Make it everlasting so nothing’s incomplete 39
It’s easy being with you, sacred simplicity
As long as we’re together, there’s no place I rather be 40
[Pre-Chorus: Jess Glynne]
[Chorus: Jess Glynne]
[Bridge]
Hmmmmmmmmmm, Hoooooooooo
Be (9x)
Yeah-e-yeah-e-yeah-e-yeah-e-yeah, yeah, yeah
[Chorus]
26Jess talks of the mileage that they have covered so far but which she enjoys because she has her love or fans with her. This song features a Japanese fan of the band. It can also be a literal meaning of the time that they have spent together or the challenges that they have been through together.
To her time ceases to have meaning when they are together and she is willing to wait as long as she can, just to be with this person.
Jess sings that all the distance in the world still means as long as they are dedicated to each other. Kyoto is in Japan, while the Bay is the short name for San Francisco Bay Area, so even with that distance between them, their love remains the same even if they have to transverse that distance on foot, step by step.
She sings that even in their differences they are still one, the differences could be in colour, language or even beliefs but these are not a hindrance to them and they even have pet names for each other.
This can be interpreted that when apart they talk on phone and if the phone dies all they have to do is change batteries and continue their conversation. Alternatively, when they do meet it is like a recharge to their relationship.
Jess is willing to do anything humanely possible just to be with her love even though it means going and doing by faith. It is a chance that she is not willing to give up.
She asks him to be sure that their relationship is something that he wants but she also believes in their love and that nothing can get between them. She believes that he will not let her down or fail her, that’s why she would rather be with him.
Jess says that together they spent some time to find the meaning of their relationship and what binds them together.
She requests that they find out what they really want or need from each other while on their mission, so that the foundation of their relationship can be built on something solid that will last forever.
Jess admits that being with him feels natural just as long term relationships should feel, without any pressure to be different or act different, that is why she is choosing him above the rest.

Really? I beg to differ, but perhaps I’m going too far?
We’re different and the same, gave you another name
Switch up the batteries
Batteries= energy source, what you run one, what powers you
We’re different= different cultures, ideas, creed, gender, class anything of that sort
the same= we’re all human, we’ve all got feelings
name= label. society puts us into categories.
If you switch up your point of view and begin to understand, you’ll find that we’re all pretty similar.

I really love this song and enjoy singing it as I’m only a twelve-year-old little girl with big dreams. I believe that this song is representing a long distance relationship between Jess who is probably Japanese since that’s where I figured the music video took place (and she also mentioned Kyoto to the Bay in the song) and an American male. I believe that when they do see each other, she makes the most of it, which is why she said “When I am with there’s no place I’d rather be”. I never really understood this song and since I saw the music video, I’ve been questioning certain things. At first I thought it was about love, but then Jess was holding hands and spinning around with a girl (I doubted that she was a lesbian), so I figured it might’ve been a deep friendship song. I now know it’s about love. Thanks explainedlyrics.com!

Jess Glynne isn’t Japanese. She’s a red headed whites woman. Lol

I don’t think it’s the San Francisco Bay, I believe she’s referring to the Tokyo Bay.
